Getting Here
Fly into Naples (NAP). From there, Sorrento is about an hour away by road, rail, or sea. Here is exactly how to do each one.
Plan Your Route

Exit arrivals and follow signs for the Curreri bus stop just outside the terminal.
Buy your ticket from the driver or online in advance. Buses run about every 1 to 2 hours during the day, so check the timetable against your landing time.
Ride to the last stop in Sorrento, near the train station. Most hotels are a short walk or taxi from there.
TipTraffic can stretch this ride, and the last bus leaves in the early evening. Late arrivals should book a private car.
Book your ferry online ahead of time, especially on weekends. Boats run from Naples' Molo Beverello port to Sorrento several times a day.
From the airport, take a taxi to Molo Beverello (about 20 minutes). Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
Enjoy the ride across the bay with Vesuvius behind you.
You arrive at Marina Piccola, Sorrento's harbor at the bottom of the cliffs. Take a taxi or the local bus up to town; the walk is steep with luggage.
TipFerries charge a small fee per suitcase and have size limits. Check before booking if you are packing heavy.
Take the Alibus shuttle from outside arrivals to Napoli Centrale station (about 20 minutes). Buy the ticket from the machine at arrivals or the driver.
Inside Napoli Centrale, head downstairs to the Circumvesuviana platforms, labeled Napoli Garibaldi.
Buy a ticket to Sorrento in person at the ticket office or machine, then stamp it in the yellow validator before boarding. You can also tap a contactless card at the gate; tap again when you exit.
Board the train marked Sorrento (not Sarno or Poggiomarino). Sorrento is the last stop, about 70 minutes.
Heads upThis is a local commuter train, not a tourist train. It is very, very busy, often standing room only, usually without air conditioning, and tough with big suitcases. Keep a close eye on your bags. Great for backpacks and budgets, not for your first day with luggage.
Flying into Rome instead? Take the high speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale (about 70 minutes), then use any option above from there.

Booking and Timing
As early as you can. Mid May is high season on the Sorrento coast, and the best rooms in town go first.
- Ideal: 9 to 12 months out (summer 2027).
- Latest we suggest: 6 months out (November 2027).
- Choose a refundable rate if your plans are not final.
Start watching fares 10 to 11 months ahead and aim to book 4 to 7 months before the wedding. A Google Flights price alert for Naples (NAP) makes this easy.
Arrive by Wednesday, May 17 so you have a full day to settle in before Friday. Many guests will stay a week or more to explore the coast.
Formal invitations will go out in late 2027 with an RSVP date. When you RSVP, please include any children coming with you. For now, an early heads up that you plan to come helps us enormously.
Getting There
Naples International (NAP) is closest, about an hour from Sorrento. Rome (FCO) has more direct flights from the US; from there, the high speed train reaches Naples in about 70 minutes. See Getting Here for step by step directions.
We would skip it. Coastal roads are narrow, parking is scarce, and much of central Sorrento limits traffic. The town is walkable, and taxis and ferries cover the rest.
US citizens need a passport valid at least 3 months beyond your departure from Europe. Europe is introducing new entry requirements for visitors, so check travel.state.gov a few months before your trip.
The Celebration
Mid May is usually sunny, with daytime highs in the low to mid 70s °F and evenings in the 60s. Rain is possible but uncommon.

While in Italy
- Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi: Our first stop in Italy together and still our favorite place. A hilltop village about 20 minutes above Sorrento by bus or taxi, with views of both the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno. The restaurants up here are out of this world. Do not leave without eating at Bar Orlando on the square: it is our favorite pizza in the world, and Orlando himself is the best. Tell him Noah and Kelly sent you.
- Crapolla Cove: A hidden fjord below Sant'Agata with crystal clear water and an ancient fishing village. Absolutely worth it, but learn from our mistakes: it is hundreds of steep stone steps down and every single one of them back up. We did this with zero water, in the sun, and briefly considered writing our wills on the way up. Bring more water than you think you need, wear real shoes, go early, and maybe skip it with bad knees or little ones.
- Capri: A 25 minute ferry from Sorrento. Go early.
- Positano and Amalfi: By bus, ferry, or a private boat day.
- Pompeii: About 30 minutes by train. Hire a guide.
- Mount Vesuvius: Hike to the crater rim for views of the bay.
- Naples: For the finest pizza of your life.
- Italy uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted; keep some cash for taxis and small cafes.
- Use a card with no foreign transaction fees.
- Tipping is appreciated but not expected. A few euros for good service is plenty.
No. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and shops. A warm "grazie" goes a long way.
